Stump Grinding in Wedgewood-Houston, Nashville

Yes, WeHo is six minutes from us - Houston, Chestnut, Humphreys, Martin, Merritt. Photos get a firm number the same day. We can usually be on site inside the week, and we work around site traffic on the blocks that are active builds.

In WeHo the grinder is cutting the ground, not just the stump

Everywhere else in this city the wheel meets wood and then soil. Here it meets a century of industry. Rock City Hosiery started up in 1897 and moved to the Brown Street mill in 1908, Vietti was canning chili nearby, United Record Pressing has been on Chestnut since 1949, and the current planning study still counts 2.2 million square feet of industrial space in the neighbourhood.

What that leaves in the ground is made fill: brick bats, mortar, cinder, clinker, slag and rail ballast mixed through the top few feet of soil on lots that were yards and sidings long before they were front gardens. A twenty-inch hackberry in that ground is a slower and more expensive stump than the same tree a mile south, because the teeth are hitting masonry as often as timber. Anyone quoting a WeHo stump off a photo of the trunk alone has not worked here.

Why WeHo grindings never go back in the hole

On a normal lot, backfilling the void with its own spoil is the cheap, sensible finish. On made ground it is not, and we will say so before you ask. What comes off the wheel here is a mix of wood fibre, clay, brick fragments and cinder - it will not compact predictably, it will not grow grass reliably, and it is the last thing you want under a new walk, a slab or a raised bed you are going to plant vegetables in.

So on the industrial-fill blocks the material is loaded out and clean soil comes back. It adds to the cost and it is the right answer. Where a customer wants the spoil kept on site, we will separate the coarse rubble from the fines and tell you plainly which part is usable and which is not, rather than raking it all flat and letting you find out in the spring.

Stump work on the Browns Creek floodway side

The east edge of the neighbourhood runs along Browns Creek, a state 303(d)-listed stream with mapped floodway and floodplain either side of it. Metro's rules there are among the strictest anywhere: development in the floodway is prohibited with very few exceptions, and any fill placed in the floodplain has to be offset by an equal volume of cut removed from it.

For stump work that translates into one simple operating rule - spoil does not get mounded into the low corner of a creek-side lot. It either goes back into the void it came from, which is volume-neutral, or it leaves the floodplain entirely on our trailer. On the cottonwood, black willow and box elder stumps right down on the creek bottom we also keep loose material out of the channel, because that is a Metro community water and grindings washing into it is a stormwater matter regardless of what any permit does or does not say.

Grinding on a block that is an active construction site

Between the urban design overlay work, the mill redevelopment around May Hosiery and the mid-rise blocks going up, a good share of WeHo addresses have a crane, a pump truck or a line of subcontractor vans outside on any given morning. Staging is the constraint.

We deal with that by working early, by bringing one machine rather than a convoy, and by confirming with the site super where a trailer can sit for two hours without blocking a concrete pour. On commercial and multi-family parcels there is a second layer: Metro's tree removal permit does apply to that class of property, along with tree inventories and a disposal plan on larger sites, so we work to the landscape plan and the permit set rather than to a homeowner's rule of thumb. Give us the drawing and we will grind to the depth the footing detail needs.

What a WeHo stump quote accounts for

  • Rubble content in the fill, tested by probing rather than assumed from the surface
  • Whether the lot sits in the mapped floodplain or floodway along Browns Creek
  • Spoil removal as the default, with clean soil brought in to replace it
  • Cutting depth read off the structural or paving drawing on an active build
  • Trailer staging agreed with the site super where the block is under construction
  • Permit and landscape-plan requirements on commercial and multi-family parcels

Stump Removal in Wedgewood-Houston (WeHo), Explained

Why is a WeHo stump quoted higher than one in Woodbine?

Because of what is underneath it. Old industrial fill means the cutting wheel is working through brick, cinder and ballast as well as wood, which slows the feed and wears teeth faster. Add the fact that the spoil usually has to leave the site rather than going back in the hole, plus soil brought in to replace it, and the same twenty-inch trunk is a longer, heavier job here than it is on undisturbed ground half a mile away.

Can we dump the grindings in the low part of the yard by the creek?

No, and that one is not our preference talking. On a floodplain lot any fill has to be balanced by an equal volume cut out of the floodplain, and in the floodway development is prohibited outright. A cubic yard of spoil tipped in a low corner is fill. It goes back in the void it came from or it goes on the trailer, and we will tell you which side of the mapped line your low corner falls on.

We are a commercial property. Do we need a permit before removal?

Very likely, yes - Metro's tree removal permit reaches commercially zoned and multi-family property even though it exempts houses and duplexes, and on sites over five thousand square feet the application wants a tree inventory by a licensed professional, a landscape plan with protection zones, and a disposal plan. Starting before the permit issues carries a daily penalty, so it is worth getting that in order first.

Will you work around our contractors?

Yes, and most WeHo jobs are exactly that. We take an early slot, keep one trailer on site for a couple of hours, and coordinate with whoever is running the programme so the grinding happens between a demolition and a pour rather than across the middle of either. If the stump needs to be out by a specific date, give us that date and we will work to it.
