Tree Stump Grinding in Nashville, Tennessee

The tree crew took the tree and left you the hard part. We grind what is left down past mower height, on lots where the machine has to be walked in rather than backed up to.

How Deep a Stump Grinder Gets in Nashville Clay

The Central Basin is a limestone floor with a thin clay lid on it. That lid is the Talbott series, a clayey residuum weathered out of Ordovician rock, and the official description puts solum thickness and depth to bedrock at twenty to forty inches. That number is an average, and averages are useless on a single lot. A knoll in Green Hills or Woodbine can carry a ledge 18 inches down while the swale sixty feet away has three feet of clay over the same rock. County-wide there are 607 mapped sinkholes, 148 of them more than three meters deep, which is what that geology does when water finds a seam.

So one Nashville stump grinds clean to ten inches below grade and the one on the next street hits refusal at six and has to be chased sideways instead of down. Bottom ground is the exception. Out on the river terraces, and down where Browns Creek and the lower Richland run, the material is deep alluvium rather than weathered rock, and stumps there come out without an argument.

We do not know which one you have until the wheel is in it. What we will tell you on the phone is which of the two is more likely for your block, and we quote knowing refusal is possible rather than pretending it is not.

Grinding Depth Follows Whatever Is Going Back On Top

For grass, six to eight inches below the surrounding grade is enough. The mower clears it, sod knits over it, and nothing shows. Put a paver patio, a drive apron, a footing or a replacement tree on that same spot and eight inches is not close. Those go to twelve or beyond, with the lateral flare taken out rather than left as a ring.

The reason is settlement, not tidiness. Buried wood rots on its own schedule, and what it leaves behind is a void. A dip that appears under turf is a wheelbarrow of topsoil. The same dip under a concrete apron is a cracked panel, and on a Nashville infill lot that apron is usually eighteen months old.

There is a second question here that catches people on rebuilt lots. On ground that has been stripped, filled and regraded after a teardown, the grade you are measuring from is not the grade the tree grew in. We find the original flare before we set depth, because grinding eight inches below a fill surface can still leave a foot of stump under it.

What Stump Grinding Costs on a Davidson County Lot

Current bands in this market. Anything under about a foot across: $100 to $175. Through the middle range, call it a foot to two feet: $175 to $350. A large hardwood: $350 to $700. Every additional stump on the same visit drops the per-stump figure, since the trailer is already unloaded. There is a floor under all of it, because hauling a machine across Davidson County for one twelve-inch hackberry does not cover the morning.

In most towns diameter drives the number. In Nashville access drives it harder. A 26-inch willow oak with the truck parked ten feet away is about an hour. The same oak behind a 1920s bungalow on a fifty-foot lot, reached down an alley shared with four trash carts, is most of a morning on a narrower machine. Tell us the route and we can price it without a site visit.

Text us a picture with a shovel or a soda can beside the stump, name the street, and describe the way in. Those three things turn a range into a committed price.

Where a Nashville Stump Grinding Job Stops

We grind stumps. We are not the crew that takes the tree down, and we do not need to be, because a stump left by somebody else is our normal starting point. If the tree is still standing, get it felled first and call us for what is left.

We do not excavate root plates with machinery, and we do not haul rounds or brush that a felling crew left stacked. Roots running out beyond the grinding circle stay in the ground unless you have asked for them specifically, and that is a separate conversation with its own price.

One boundary matters more here than anywhere else in the metro. A stump out past your sidewalk, in the planted strip that runs to the street, is not your tree. It is Metro property and it carries a permit requirement of its own. That is a phone conversation, not something to discover with a machine already unloaded in front of the house.

What we need to quote a Nashville stump over the phone

  • Width taken at the widest part of the flare, down at soil level, not at the cut
  • The species, or failing that a close photo of the bark plus anything still leafed nearby
  • The neighborhood and street, because depth to rock varies block to block here
  • How a machine reaches the stump: driveway, side gate, rear alley, or none of those
  • The narrowest point on that route in inches, measured post to post
  • Whether anything is going back on the spot, and what: sod, a patio, a footing, a tree
  • Whether you want the grindings left and crowned over the hole or loaded out

Tree Stump Grinding in Davidson County: Common Questions

The tree company said they would grind it for an extra fee. Why call anyone else?

Plenty of them will, and if the price is right, take it. What we see is a flush cut sold as a grind, or a grind done at four inches because the crew is finishing a removal with a chainsaw crew's schedule. If the stump is in a curb strip, on a slope, next to a slab or beside a marked line, it is a separate job with separate depth requirements, and that is where a second number is worth getting.

Can you grind a stump that was cut flush years ago and has grass over it?

Yes, and it is common work in East Nashville where crews flush-cut in a hurry after March 2020. The complication is finding the edges. Old flush cuts hide under sod and the flare is wider than the visible disc, so probe it before you point at it. Also, a stump that has sat six years has soil and stone worked into the crown, which is tooth wear rather than a scheduling problem.

Does the hole need filling, and do you do that?

The grindings themselves will crown over the hole and settle for a season or two, which is fine under grass. We rake and crown as part of the job. If you want topsoil brought in and the spot brought to finish grade for sod, say so when you book and it is quoted as a separate line, because it means a second vehicle and a source of soil.

How far out do you go, and does the drive change the price?

All of Davidson County and the ring around it. Crossing this metro is a real constraint and we say so: a Joelton job and a Cane Ridge job on the same afternoon is not a plan, it is an hour and a half of Briley Parkway. We batch by quadrant and offer dates accordingly. The drive does not appear as a surcharge on a normal single stump, but it does decide which day you are offered.
