Stump Grinding in East Nashville and Five Points

Yes. Five Points is seven minutes from us and we are on Woodland, Holly and Fatherland most weeks. Send a photo of the stump and a firm number comes back the same day; ordinary grinds go on the calendar three to five working days out.

Six-year-old tornado stumps in East Nashville yards

The EF3 that came through at 12:32 on the morning of 3 March 2020 was at its worst right over Five Points, and the cleanup that followed was about getting trees off roofs and out of streets, not about finishing the job. Crews cut what they could reach at knee height and moved to the next address. Six years later those flush cuts are still sitting behind houses on Holly, Russell and Forest Avenue, greyed over, sprouting hackberry seedlings out of the collar and settling into a soft dish that the mower drops into every pass.

What brings people to the phone is rarely the stump itself. It is the fence contractor who cannot set a corner post where the old water oak stood, the buyer's inspector writing up a trip hazard beside the back steps, or the raised bed that has been mapped out on paper for two summers and cannot be built until the wood underneath is gone. On a lot eighteen hundredths of an acre with a detached garage eating the back corner, one dead stump takes up a meaningful fraction of the usable yard.

Getting a stump grinder down a 50-foot East Nashville lot

The streetcar grid here was platted at fifty feet wide, and the house usually sits close enough to one property line that the run down the side is a footpath rather than a driveway. Between the house wall and the neighbour's fence there is typically thirty-four to forty inches, and half of that is taken by a gas meter, a hose bib, an air conditioning pad or the concrete steps off a side door.

So the first thing we measure is not the stump. It is the narrowest pinch point on the route in, gate posts included, because that decides which machine comes off the trailer. Our narrow-frame grinder clears a standard thirty-six-inch gate and will walk a paved side run; it cuts a slower wheel path than the big machine, which is why a three-foot water oak behind a Fatherland Street bungalow is priced as a longer visit than the same trunk on an open lot. Where the gate is genuinely too tight, taking down two fence panels and resetting them afterwards is normal work and we quote it that way rather than turning the job down.

Grinding the oaks planted after the 1916 East Nashville fire

The fire of 22 March 1916 took more than five hundred houses off this grid, and the rebuilding that followed set the canopy you are living under now. Water oak and willow oak went into the curb strips through the 1910s and 1920s, silver maple filled in through the 1940s, and volunteer hackberry has been colonising the alley fence lines ever since.

They behave nothing alike under a cutting wheel. A hundred-year-old water oak is dense and often hollow at the heart, so the wheel alternates between hard sapwood and a punky centre full of soil and brick fragments washed in over decades. Silver maple is wet and stringy and throws long ribbons that pack rather than pile, and it is on Metro's prohibited list now for exactly the reason you are calling: it drops leaders. Hackberry is the easy one, soft and quick, but it is almost never alone - pull one and you find three more stems along the same fence line.

Which East Nashville stumps are Metro's and not yours

On the older blocks the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the kerb is city right-of-way, and the tree standing in it is a Metro public tree even though you mow around it. That is a different conversation from the one about the stump in your back yard, and it starts with Metro Urban Forestry rather than with us. We mark which side of that line your stump falls on at the quote stage, not on the morning of the work.

The other thing standing in these strips now is young. Root Nashville put more than four thousand replacement trees into the tornado corridor in the first season, East End and Lockeland Springs among the named areas, and a fair number went in near where a mature tree came out. Those two-inch whips have a root zone about as wide as their branch spread, and we keep machine tracks and spoil off it rather than compacting a five-year-old tree to get at a six-year-old stump.

Where the grindings go on a 37206 lot with no side yard

A ground stump gives back two to three times the volume people picture, because the wheel is not only turning wood into chip - it brings up everything held in the root plate too. A thirty-inch trunk behind a Russell Street house produces a mound that will not fit discreetly anywhere on a fifty-foot lot, and yard waste is not allowed in a Metro cart.

So it is decided at quote time, not at day's end. Either the spoil goes back into the void and gets crowned an inch or two proud so it settles level by the second rain, or it leaves on the trailer with clean soil coming back in its place. The second is what people pick when sod is going down. What we will not do is rake it flat and leave you with a dip by August.

How a Five Points stump job gets planned

  • The tightest gap on the route measured first, gate posts and meter included, before a machine is chosen
  • Fence panels lifted and reset where the gate is under thirty-four inches, priced in rather than argued about
  • Curb-strip trees identified as Metro property on the quote, not discovered on the day
  • Root zones of post-tornado replacement trees kept clear of tracks and spoil
  • Six to twelve inches under grade for lawn, deeper where a post, pad or patio is going in
  • Grindings hauled off or backfilled and crowned, agreed before we arrive
  • Sidewalk and street edge swept and blown before the trailer moves

Questions About Stump Removal in East Nashville / Five Points

Still got tornado stumps in the back yard. Is six years too late?

No, and they are a good bit easier now than they were in 2021. Six years of decay softens the outer wood and the root plate has stopped holding water the way a fresh cut does, so the wheel moves through faster. What you do get is soil and grit washed into the hollow centre, which is hard on teeth, and a ring of sprouts to clear first. We price these by trunk diameter at the cut, not by how long it has been sitting.

Will your grinder actually fit through a 36-inch gate?

Yes. The narrow machine is built for exactly this grid and clears a standard thirty-six-inch opening with room to steer. The catch is what sits past the gate - a dogleg around an air conditioning unit, a step down off a porch, or a raised bed pinching the path. Send a photo looking down the side of the house along with the stump and we can tell you before we book whether it walks in or whether panels come out.

The power line runs right over the stump. Is that a problem?

Not for the grinding, but it is worth knowing where the responsibility sits. NES clears its own line corridors on a three-to-four-year cycle, but the service drop running from the pole to your meter is not their trim work - that one is the owner's. They will de-energise the drop at no charge so work can happen safely underneath it, and arranging that a few days ahead is normal. Anyone working within ten feet of a live conductor needs a line-clearance certification.

Whose tree is it if it is between the sidewalk and the street?

Metro's. That grass strip is public right-of-way, so the tree in it is a city tree and grinding it out is not something a homeowner can simply order. We handle that as a permitted job with Urban Forestry rather than pretending it is a normal back-yard grind. The stump in your own yard, behind your own fence, is yours outright and needs no permission from anyone.

How much to grind a stump in East Nashville?

A small stump under about twelve inches usually lands between one hundred and one hundred seventy-five dollars. Mid-size runs one seventy-five to three fifty. A large old hardwood, or one where the machine has to be walked in through a gate rather than driven in, is three fifty to seven hundred. Several in one visit drop in price per stump. Photograph it with something for scale and you get a firm figure, not a range.

Can you leave it ready for sod, not just ground down?

Yes, say so when you book. For turf we take the grind deeper than the usual lawn depth, pull the spoil off the property, chase the surface roots that would otherwise telegraph through the new grass, and bring in soil to fill and level. Sod laid straight over loose grindings starves for nitrogen and sinks unevenly, so the extra soil is not an upsell - it is the difference between a patch that takes and one you redo next spring.
